Cousteau Comes to the Chesapeake

In October 2013, Philippe Cousteau's EarthEcho International will launch a bold new series of annual expeditions that combine the Cousteau legacy of exploration and discovery with standards-based educational resources to engage and empower young people in protecting the planet. The first journey begins in one of the world's largest aquatic dead zones located in the center of the Chesapeake Bay with EarthEcho Expedition: Into the Dead Zone

Through this Expedition, science is an exciting adventure. Learning becomes relevant and young people explore their communities to discover how classroom concepts play out in the real world. Educators will be able to participate in and utilize:

  • A live webcast to kick off the launch
  • Expedition resources—released once a week for six weeks—developed to help educators teach critical elements of Next Generation Science and Common Core State Standards. Materials include:
    • Original video series
    • Lesson plans
    • "How to" videos featuring youth demonstrating hands-on science experiments
    • Action Guides, providing service learning-ready opportunities for classrooms
  • Access to incentives such as educator grants and the opportunity to embark on Expedition in 2014

Students will use the data they gathered through their hands on science activities to identify issues in their communities that matter to them, and develop and implement related projects. Classrooms can work at their own pace throughout the year, as materials will remain available on our website.
