The Fight for Clean Water

the Commonwealth promised to fence livestock from farm streams on 89,500 new acres in three years, but only 11,204 new acres have been fenced, or 13 percent of the milestone goal.

Virginia is Falling Short on Goals

  • Analysis finds little evidence of improvement in Bay cleanup pledged by Virginia last year. For example, the Commonwealth promised to fence livestock from farm streams on 89,500 new acres in three years, but only 13 percent of the milestone goal has been reached so far. Find out more about Virginia's progress on Bay cleanup milestones. Read CBF's letter to the state's Secretary of Natural Resources.

Holden Legislation a Concern

  • CBF appreciates Congressman Tim Holden's willingness to strengthen H.R. 5509.  However, CBF remains concerned that ultimately, HR 5509 does not ensure that the pollution reduction from agriculture needed to get the Bay and its tributaries cleaned up by 2025 will be made.

Oysters Are Getting Tougher

  • A new CBF report finds that Chesapeake Bay oysters are developing natural resistance to the diseases that have so devastated the Bay’s oyster population in recent decades and calls for additional sanctuaries to repopulate the species.

      Nitrogen is the Bay's Oil

      • We have a "Gulf oil spill" right here on Chesapeake Bay that's a constant, insidious poisoning of another national treasure. Every single day nearly one million pounds of polluting nitrogen flow into the Chesapeake—every day, 24/7, 365 days a year. Each of us pollutes and each of us can pollute less.
