Volunteer Opportunities

Join the individuals who make a difference for the Chesapeake Bay. Show your commitment by becoming a CBF volunteer. All our events and activities are listed on our events calendar. Please check for dates and times. Follow the links below for details on how to get involved in our programs. Or sign-up online to be a CBF volunteer.

Hands-on Restoration Projects

• Tree buffer planting: Help plant trees each spring and fall in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia.
• Tree nursery work: Help organize the tree nursery at CBF’s farm in Upper Marlboro, Maryland.
• Living shoreline restoration: Whether you live on the water or not, this project is a great way to learn about and try out Bay-friendly shoreline erosion control techniques. Projects are held in Maryland. Check our calendar or send an e-mail to MDRestoration@cbf.org.
  
• Wetland planting: Plant vegetation that improves water quality by slowing stormwater runoff and absorbing pollutants. Check our calendar for upcoming events.
• Oyster restoration: Help raise native oysters from the seed stage to maturity in one of two locations: Gloucester, Virginia and Shady Side, Maryland.
• Oyster gardening: Raise oysters alongside your own dock or at a local marina or community pier in Maryland and Virginia.
• Underwater grass restoration: Grow and plant underwater grasses in Virginia. This is an excellent activity for the entire family.
• Clean the Bay Day: Each year in June, help collect hundreds of thousands of pounds of trash from the Bay in Virginia.
• Native landscape gardening: Help maintain the native gardens at our headquarters in Annapolis, Maryland.

Outreach and Education

• Fairs and festivals: Represent CBF at boat shows, seafood festivals, state fairs, and other outreach events.
• Speakers Bureau: Give presentations to interested groups about the health of the Bay, its streams, and rivers. We will train you first!
• VoiCes Program: Participate in Volunteers as Chesapeake Stewards, a two-part training program that teaches participants how to help the Chesapeake Bay in their own communities.

Advocacy

• Action Network: Become an advocate for the Bay from the comfort of your own computer.
• Office work: Help with a variety of office tasks, including research, data entry, answering phones, mailings, and other administrative assistance.
• Tour guide: Conduct tours of the Philip Merrill Environmental Center, CBF’s green headquarters building in Annapolis, Maryland.
