Education Programs and Information About the Bay 

STUDENT ACTION TRAINING

Motivate students to initiate and plan hands-on projects that restore the Bay's natural resources. Guide them through the process from idea to successful project. To help that process go smoothly, you will learn how to financially support your students' projects through grant writing.

Workshop Dates:

October 4, 2010 - The workshop will be held from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. at the VCU Rice Center in Charles City

November, 17, 2010 - The workshop will be held from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. at CBF's Philip Merrill Center

Workshop Objectives

Participants will learn to do the following:

  • Facilitate an action project with students
  • Conduct a variety of hands-on field-based investigations and integrate service-learning opportunities
  • Learn to find an appropriate grant source and how to complete a grant proposal for restoration project funding

What to Bring

  • Lunch - the day will be packed with no time to step out to purchase lunch
  • Be dressed to be inside and outside
  • Map of your schoolyard (a sketch or blueprint will be sufficient)
  • Chesapeake Classrooms Teacher Guide
  • Try to come with fellow Chesapeake Classrooms teachers at your school, as we will be working on long range planning for your schoolyard restoration (1,2 and 5 years).

All participants will receive:

  • CBF’s Field Investigation Manual
  • Pond and Stream Safari Kit
  • Water Quality Testing Kit
  • Other useful curriculum-enhancing goodies
