FROM THE GROUND UP: Donations

Feeding the Hungry
Every year, we distribute 40-50% of our harvest to low-income people in the DC area.  In 2008, that came out to 25,511 pounds of produce. This included donations to the following agencies:

  • Salvation Army: Operates a food pantry, transitional housing, youth programs and a wide range of other social services to clients in Prince George's county.
  • DC Central Kitchen: Prepares 4500 meals daily for homeless shelters and other social-service agencies in DC.
  • Emmaus Services for the Aging: Hosts a market of free, healthy groceries for low-income seniors.
  • Food and Friends: Provides prepared meals to people with debilitating illness, such as HIV/AIDS and cancer.
  • My Mother's House: A holistic health facility for women and their children which offers meals and food baskets.
  • Reston Interfaith: Offers groceries and prepared foods, transitional housing and other services in Reston, Virginia.
  • Second Genesis in Melwood: A residential treatment facility for homeless women with addictions and their children, located down the road from our farm.

Each organization has applied to become a recipient, and we've chosen them because they can pick up the produce reliably, and distribute it quickly to low-income individuals who can use it. Not every agency has the transportation, the refrigerated space, or the flexibility in what types of food they can use that makes a good fit with our farm.  Typically the produce we donate includes some that we have harvested especially for that organization, as well as the leftover produce from the CSA pick-up the day before.
