Fully half of Virginia is drained by Chesapeake Bay rivers, and two-thirds of the state's population lives within the Bay watershed. From the farm fields of the Shenandoah Valley to the pinewoods of the Eastern Shore, for most Virginians the Bay is as close as the nearest creek or stream.

Spotting Control Failures | Reporting Control Failures  Resources | Training

CBF offers evening training classes (see sidebar) for volunteers who sign up as Virginia Mud Busters. Training is free-of-charge, but registration is required. Instructors will explain:

  1. The basics of erosion and sediment control.
  2. How to identify upcoming and current development in your community.
  3. How to recognize control failures and runoff pollution.
  4. How to document, report, and follow-up with CBF and local erosion and sediment control officials to seek problem resolution.

Attendees will receive easy-to-use guidance materials, site evaluation sheets, and current contact information for local officials. Snacks and drinks will also be provided.

These training classes are optional, but all Virginia Mud Busters are encouraged to attend.  Mud Busters who do not complete training can still complete reports and submit them to CBF staff for further processing.

Class size is limited, so enroll soon!
