For those students who either participated in previous years, missed the 2010 deadline, or are interested in further developing their leadership skills, CBF encourages you to host your own Bay Leadership Course.  We recognize this will take some adult supervision and guidance to get the paperwork done, but here are a few suggestions:

  • Organize a group of other students to do a one-day CBF outdoor education trip (ask an adult to help you fill out the application)
  • Host a local Bay Day in your town or neighborhood
  • Volunteer for a tree planting or stream clean-up - CBF's calendar has great opportunities
  • Organize a bike riding day to raise awareness about alternative transportation, visit Bay-friendly spots along the way
  • Organize a service or action project - CBF offers project ideas on our service-learning site

We will be glad to help you with this process.  Contact Allyson Ladley Gibson at agibson@cbf.org with a draft of your plan or itinerary.

Skipjackin'
July 11-17

Open to students entering grades 9-12 in Fall 2010

Come on a one-week long exploration of the middle Chesapeake Bay with veteran CBF staff members aboard the Stanley Norman, a 107-year-old skipjack. Students will be the crew for the week, taking on different jobs each day. Their experiences will build up to "the challenge day" when they will be responsible for sailing and navigating the boat. Along the journey students will learn to work as a team while sailing open Bay waters, venturing into historic ports, learning maritime history of the Bay, contributing to a group service project, making biological observations, testing water quality, and being immersed in the Chesapeake Bay. Come aboard for a trip of a lifetime!

Chesapeake Exploration
July 18-24

Open to students entering grades 7-8 in Fall 2010

Trying to figure out how to spend the summer? Does getting dirty while canoeing and exploring uninhabited islands of the Chesapeake Bay sound fun? What about catching oysters and crabs from the deck of a workboat? This summer, spend a week exploring the Chesapeake Bay! For one week, you and other students from around the bay will paddle, camp, and muck your way down one of its amazing tributaries to our final destination on Fox Island. Questions discussed will include "what is the health of the Bay," "how do we affect the water," and "what can we do to help?" Leadership skills, group living, service, and environmental responsibility will be points of emphasis throughout the trip. So what are you waiting for? Sign up and join us for a Chesapeake Exploration.

Mountains to the Bay
August 1-7

Open to students entering grades 9-12 in Fall 2010

The best way to get to know the Chesapeake Bay and all its majesty is to follow one of the largest tributaries that runs through West Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Maryland: the Potomac River. Come hike and paddle with CBF expert leaders for one week to investigate land uses, natural wonders, and hidden towns along this mighty river. See and measure the health of the Potomac River through water quality testing and biological sampling. The trip will also include a service project that will benefit the river's tributaries. We will be camping along the banks of the river until we make our way to the Great Fox Island education center in the heart of the Chesapeake Bay. There we will be completely immersed in activities like fishing, canoeing, marsh-mucking, exploring disappearing islands, beach proggin', observing marsh wildlife, and interviewing watermen, all while learning a multitude of hard and soft leadership skills. Come join us on an adventure that you will never forget!
