| After | | |
Cows aren’t good for streams and streams aren’t good for cows! After cows were fenced out of this pasture stream, lush vegetation once again grew along the banks. This vegetation holds the soil in place and acts as a filter for polluted runoff. Waste from the animals then goes where it belongs in the pasture, not in the stream. Stable footing for livestock, dry barnyards and clean drinking water protect herd health and improve milk production. The barnyard to the left is in need of stabilization and roof runoff controls. In this unimproved condition, the area is less healthy for livestock and channels polluted runoff directly into the stream. After improvements, all runoff is directed into a storage facility for application to cropland. Rain water falling on the barn roof can safely flow to the stream if directed away from the barnyard.
