OUR STRATEGIC PLAN

Executive Summary

Mission:
Save the Bay, defined as achieving a Health Index for the Bay of 70 by the year 2050.

Vision:
The Chesapeake Bay and its tributary rivers, broadly recognized as a national treasure, will be highly productive and in good health as measured by water clarity, lack of toxic contaminants, and abundance of natural filters in the water and on the land.

2010 Goal:
Increase CBF's Bay Health Index from 27 to 40 by 2010 as a first step toward reaching a saved Bay with a Health Index of 70 by 2050.

Objectives:

  1. Create a broad, knowledgeable, and active constituency to save the Bay.
    1. Build the next generation of motivated and committed Bay stewards through student-focused education programs.
    2. Develop an engaged and active movement of adult constituents willing to take action on behalf of the Bay and willing to support CBF.
  2. Design and implement programs that will contribute to achieving the following measurable results:
    1. Reduce the annual loading of nitrogen by 50 percent (by approximately 150 million pounds)* through:
      1. Agricultural Reductions
      2. Sewage Treatment Plant Upgrades and Enforcement
      3. Urban/Suburban Stormwater Runoff Reductions
      4. Air Pollution Reductions
      5. Natural Filters Restoration
    2. Reduce the flow of toxic chemicals to the Bay watershed by 25 percent.
    3. Achieve a tenfold increase in the oyster population, a twofold increase in the blue crab population, and a fivefold increase in the shad population.
    4. Reduce the rate of loss of forests, farms, and wetlands by 30 percent, and permanently protect an additional 5 percent of the watershed through:
      1. Patterns of Growth Improvements
      2. Land Conservation
