Conference Center and Events Intern (Unpaid)

The Chesapeake Bay Foundation seeks a Conference Center and Events Intern to be based at its Philip Merrill Environmental Center headquarters located in Annapolis. This is a part-time unpaid Internship for the Summer of 2018.

About the Chesapeake Bay Foundation

The Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) is the largest regional non-profit conservation organization working solely to save the Bay. Established in 1967, CBF has a staff of approximately 185 employees working in offices in Annapolis Maryland; Richmond and VA Beach, Virginia; Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; and Washington, D.C., and in 15 field education program locations. Our staff and volunteer corps work throughout the region educating students and adults, advocating for clean water polices, restoring waterways, and litigating when necessary.

CBF's headquarters office in Annapolis, MD is the Philip Merrill Environmental Center, the world’s first U.S. Green Build Council’s LEED platinum building. In 2014, CBF opened The Brock Environmental Center in Virginia Beach, VA. The Brock Center is one of the most energy efficient, environmentally smart buildings in the world.

Context of the Position

Administration's mission is to significantly contribute to the improvement of the water quality of the Chesapeake Bay by providing a strong operations infrastructure for CBF staff.  The mission is to develop and maintain procedures, systems, equipment, facilities and property so that staff can work safely, efficiently, and creatively to Save the Bay.  All programs are to incorporate green practices.

The Conference Center and Events Intern will have the opportunity to shadow members of the CBF Administration team in order to learn about the inner-workings of the department as it relates to office inventory, Green building standards and processes, conference center coordination and the daily general duties needed to maintain the Philip Merrill Environmental Center headquarters building for CBF.  The intern will enjoy hands-on experience by observing, assisting and supporting the Office Manager, Conference Center Coordinator and the Executive Assistant to the VP of Administration with such functions as:

Essential functions include:

  • Monitor and update the social media sites (Facebook, Wedding Wire) for the CBF Merrill Center Events Program. Research ways to keep the sites engaging and exciting. Respond to questions and inquiries as needed.
  • Work with the Conference Center coordinator on marketing the facility by planning and implementing a wedding expo/open house to showcase the facility and the green aspects of our space.
  • Create a comparative guide for local venues.
  • Research vendors we work with to create a vendor information book for clients who have booked the venue. Use this information to highlight our vendors on social media.

Professional Experience and Qualifications

CBF seeks an enthusiastic college student that can derive the most benefit from this valuable learning experience.  Applicant should be a college student participating in a work /study program and have an interest in non-profit organizations, LEED and the US Green Building Council. The student should also have a general knowledge of and enthusiasm for CBF’s mission and work. Must have proficient Microsoft Office Skills. This position is part time; hours are flexible.
