Building Inspiration

The Brock Environmental Center at Pleasure House Point is the most sustainable building in Virginia and among the greenest in the world. It is an international model for green building and serves as the regional home for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation's Virginia Beach operations. The Brock Environmental Center showcases effective habitat restoration and provides space for community meetings and offices for staff and partner conservation groups.

The Center has been designed for both LEED Platinum designation and full certification as a Living Building™, the most advanced measure of sustainable building. As a Living Building™, the Brock Environmental Center is an international model for green-building techniques, materials, energy efficiency, water use, and landscaping, and a facility that everyone can take pride in, visit, use, and enjoy.

The environmental standards for a Living Building™ are established by the International Living Future Institute. The Brock Environmental Center is the first of its kind in Virginia and among only 18 prospective Living Buildings™ on the East Coast to achieve this distinguished designation.

Green building is nothing new to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. In 2001, CBF led by example, building the first LEED Platinum certified building in the world—the Philip Merrill Environmental Center, CBF's headquarters in Annapolis, Maryland.
