Sewage Treatment Plants

Recent advances in sewage treatment technology promise major reductions in nitrogen flowing from plants, but they must be applied to virtually all of the over-three-hundred major plants in the watershed (those that discharge more than 0.5 million gallons of wastewater per day). In addition, much of the infrastructure (pipes, pumping stations) that connects our houses, businesses, schools, and public buildings to the plants must be rebuilt to eliminate leakage and allow the plants to operate efficiently. Finally, the plants must improve their treatment systems enough to accommodate our growing population and still make net reductions of nitrogen discharged to the Bay system.
