Bay-Friendly Landscaping

Create Filters or Habitats

Forests and wetlands are the best natural filters of runoff to remove sediment and nitrogen.

Trees and shrubs have roots that penetrate wide and deep into the soil, absorbing rainwater and slowing run off into nearby waterways.

Wetlands can hold large quanties of water, releasing it gradually while recharging groundwater. They are also critical habitat for many species of plants and animals.

Because they are mown infrequently, native meadows do not have compacted soils, and rain filters into the soil and is less apt to run off your property.
