The Chesapeake Bay Foundation seeks an Oyster Gardening/Restoration Intern to be based at both their Philip Merrill Center Environmental Center headquarters located in Annapolis MD, and their Oyster Restoration Center (ORC) in Shady Side, MD as well as various field locations.

The Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) is the largest regional non-profit conservation organization working solely to save the Bay. CONTEXT OF THE POSITION

The Oyster Restoration Intern will assist Chesapeake Bay Foundation Oyster Restoration Center staff with several potential projects including but not limited to: oyster gardening events, reef ball events, shelling shaking, setting spat on shell, tank monitoring, deploying reef balls/ spat on shell, cleaning tanks between spat sets, boat maintenance /repair. The Restoration Intern will be assisting in pre-event preparation, working with volunteers during restoration events as well as daily operations and upkeep of the center between events. This is also an outside field position that will include data collection responsibilities. Outreach and education is a vital part of the experience at ORC; applicants should be comfortable addressing groups of 15-30 people. It is important that you have a drive to ‘Save The Bay’ as well as educate and inspire our volunteers. Applicants should be comfortable in and around the water and on large/small vessels.

Essential functions include:

Assist a minimum of 3 days a week including some weekends with field operations at CBF’s MD Oyster Restoration Center in Shady Side, MD and surrounding field locations, Annapolis, St. Michaels, and Solomon’s Island.
Assist with on and below deck operations of CBF vessels and maintenance
Assist with managing volunteer events associated with the program
Engage volunteers and connect their passion to restore oysters to support the enforcement and implementation of the TMDL (Total Maximum Daily Loads) pollution limits.
Assist with data collection, analysis and management
Comfortable working long hours outside in various conditions
Comfortable working with power tools or a willingness to learn.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

Successful candidate should be a college student majoring in environmental science, fishery science, aquaculture, marine affairs, or a related field. Applicants must be actively enrolled in college and working toward a degree. Self-initiative, the ability to work independently, as well as with a team and excellent written and oral communication skills are required. A candidate with experience with shellfish aquaculture and/or spat-on-shell is preferred. We seek a creative thinker interested in learning about the Chesapeake Bay as well as furthering the Foundation’s mission to "Save the Bay”.

The internship will begin in May 2013 and end in August 2013. Exact start and end dates are negotiable. The successful candidate must have reliable transportation for travel to CBF’s MD Oyster Restoration Center in Shady Side, MD, Philip Merrill Environmental Center in Annapolis, MD, and live in close proximity to the Annapolis area.
