Emily Thorpe

Pennsylvania Student Leadership Coordinator

CBF educator Emily Thorpe.

Tenure at CBF: 2015-Present

Education: BA in Environmental Studies and BS in Biology, Salisbury University

Honors thesis: "Bigger Bang for your Buck: Using Natural Filters in the Maryland Watershed Implementation Plan and Chesapeake Bay Restoration"

Prior Experience:

  • Susquehanna Watershed Environmental Education Program Assistant Manager
  • Environmental Studies Academic Technician at Dickinson College
  • Chesapeake Conservation Corps Volunteer with the Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (CBNERR-MD)

Emily grew up in Glenn Dale, Maryland, exploring suburban creeks and streams, surprising her parents with the occasional turtle, toad, or tree frog. Her appreciation for aquatic ecosystems ranges from freshwater streams to salt marshes and especially to the brackish waters of the Chesapeake Bay. It was this passion that directed her studies at Salisbury University, with classes such as wetland ecology, estuarine biology, and topics in Chesapeake Bay studies, as well as research on wetland and Bay policy.

After college, Emily became a member of the Chesapeake Conservation Corps, working with the Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve in both environmental education and stewardship. Emily's position providing curriculum and field trip support at Dickinson College is what brought her to Pennsylvania, where she fell in love with a whole new part of the watershed. Emily is both honored and excited to be joining the ranks of such talented educators as those at CBF and is looking forward to new experiences and sharing her love of the Chesapeake with others!

Favorite Quote: "We usually think in terms of people saving the environment; but I must wonder if it isn't the opposite—nature presents its charms, like an artful fly is cast to a trout, and we, leaping to the bait, are brought to its defense." - Tom Horton, Bay Country
