CBF Issues Statement on Blue Crab Population
(ANNAPOLIS, MD)(HAMPTON ROADS, VA)—Chris Moore, Chesapeake Bay Foundation Senior Scientist, issued this statement following the release of the annual Winter Crab Dredge Survey in Maryland and Virginia:
"The results of the survey are good news, for the Chesapeake Bay's blue crab population, crabbers, and those who enjoy eating them. The increase in population indicates the current management plan being implemented by Maryland and Virginia is working to restore the health of one of the Bay's most iconic species.
"However, fishery managers should remain cautious as the number of adult, female blue crabs, while increased in this year's survey, are still below the levels that science recommends. Continued conservative management of the fishery and improving water quality by implementing the Chesapeake Clean Water Blueprint are the keys to a building and sustaining a healthy crab population."
