Education Bill Signed by President Obama Recognizes Environmental Literacy
(ANNAPOLIS, MD)—Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) President William C. Baker issued this statement today after President Obama signed the Every Student Succeeds Act, the federal education bill that succeeds the No Child Left Behind Act:
"With the signing of this law, the United States government for the first time recognizes environmental literacy as an important part of every student's well-rounded education. This opens the door for students around the Chesapeake region and the country to participate in the kind of engaging and powerful outdoor experiences that CBF has been providing and promoting for more than 40 years.
"The inclusion of environmental literacy and environmental education in key provisions of the primary act governing education in America is the culmination of years of leadership by CBF and our partners. CBF would especially like to thank Representative John Sarbanes (MD) and Senator Jack Reed (RI) for championing environmental literacy and its inclusion in the new law."
