Following an initial kick off and a test day on the water, last Friday we welcomed Northrop Grumman and Maryland Congressman John Sarbanes to our Annapolis headquarters to show off the technology their engineers came up with to better count and research the Bay's oyster population. Currently, in order to monitor an oyster reef, CBF scientists use what's known as a clear water box to take pictures periodically over a a 100-meter line. But this clear water box doesn't give us the full picture of the reef. Northrop Grumman engineers are instead using light-field cameras, lasers, microphones, and SONAR in the hopes of giving us a better way to monitor—and restore—these reefs. This will revolutionize monitoring the progress of oyster restoration. The engineers will likely combine technology that CBF staff will be trained on and be able to use next year. 📷 Sarah Boynton #SaveTheBay
