In 2016, the Chesapeake Bay Commission championed the notion of designating the second week of June as Chesapeake Bay Awareness Week. Legislation establishing the special week was enacted in Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. It encourages us all to celebrate the Chesapeake Bay with events, activities, and educational programs designed to raise awareness of the importance of this national treasure.
Here a just a few ways you can join in the celebration this year:
- Clean the Bay Day, Virginia
Join thousands of Virginians working together to restore and protect the Chesapeake Bay by removing litter and debris from its rivers and streams at hundreds of sites all across the Commonwealth.
- Oyster Planting, Maryland
Come along on an oyster planting trip leaving from the Downtown Sailing Center in Baltimore.
- Clean Water Concert: Patrick Albán and Noche Latina, Maryland
Enjoy a free, family-friendly celebration to both celebrate our community and raise awareness about what we can do to help restore health to local rivers.
- Pennsylvania Student Leadership Canoe Classic
High school students from across the Keystone State team up and put their canoeing skills to the test against other high school teams.
- Northern Virginia VoiCeS
Sign up for our signature multi-week adult education program providing in-depth classroom and field sessions in Northern Virginia.
- Shell Shaking, Maryland
Help the CBF Oyster Restoration crew prepare oyster shells for the upcoming restoration season.
- Virginia Beach Oyster Gardening Seminar
