"Shell shaking" involves cleaning oyster shells by shaking off the dirt and debris so baby oysters can successfully grow on them. This is critical in our oyster restoration efforts, as without cleaning the oyster shells, we could potentially lose millions of healthy larvae as they attach to debris, rather than the shell, and are later washed out into the silt.
This event is a bit of a workout, but a fun hands-on experience. (See the video above, courtesy of Chesapeake Bay Magazine.) With lifting involved, it is not recommended for individuals with a bad back or other health concerns.
All participants must bring their own gloves and closed-toe shoes. Participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
COVID-19 Precautions:
- For the health and safety of our volunteers, CBF requires that all volunteers complete CBF’s Health and COVID Screening Form prior to engaging in any volunteer efforts. This includes conducting a personal COVID health screening prior to the start of the event.
- Participants must wear CDC-approved masks (neck gaiters and bandannas are not allowed as acceptable face coverings for any CBF activity).
- We will not be providing water, so please be sure to bring enough to last you through the event.
All events take place on Fridays from 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. at CBF's Maryland Oyster Restoration Center, 4800 Atwell Road, Shady Side, Maryland 20764.
