Bill Portlock

Senior Educator

Tenure at CBF: 1981 - Present

Bill joined CBF in 1981 as Virginia Field Director and began CBF's education efforts in the Commonwealth.

He has been conducting field investigations for students and teachers ever since, as well as developing new CBF educational programs. His responsibilities now include directing and leading professional development programs and graduate classes for teachers and school administrators in Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania; developing and nurturing institutional partnerships (including colleges, universities, state and federal agencies); and forming partnerships with other community providers of science and environmental education.

He has helped make good environmental education practices public policy in Virginia by appointment of the Governor to the Virginia Environmental Education Commission. He regularly monitors Virginia's rivers and the Bay as a water quality and living resources specialist for CBF, and he documents the Bay and rivers photographically. His photographs are regularly used in CBF publications and in books, journals, and popular magazines.

His multi-day courses for teachers have received state and national awards, including from the Soil and Water Conservation Society, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (National Environmental Education Merit Award), and, in 2005, was awarded the Thomas Jefferson Medal for Outstanding Contributions to Natural Science Education by the Virginia Museum of Natural History, in association with the Smithsonian Institution.
