CBF Applauds Appropriation Funding
for Chesapeake Bay Trust Fund

Kim Coble, Maryland Executive Director of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, issued the following statement following the decision today by the Maryland General Assembly budget conference committee to appropriate $20 million to the Chesapeake and Atlantic Coastal Bays 2010 Trust Fund:

"Maryland legislators deserve praise for this action. They have demonstrated their commitment to the Chesapeake Bay as a top priority even in difficult economic times. Speaker of the House Michael E. Busch again has displayed his leadership and resolve to help the Bay. Ensuring this funding was in place could not have been done without Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller's continued dedication to the Bay.

"Governor O'Malley also expressed his support for the Bay by allocating in his original budget $20 million to the Trust Fund and now the legislature has agreed the Bay's health is too important to shortchange.

"During these difficult economic times, we applaud House and Senate leadership for recognizing the value of a restored bay and realizing the economy benefits when the Bay benefits. Restoring some funding to the Trust Fund will mean more on the ground jobs for Marylanders, and a healthier Bay.

"We are hopeful that as the economy strengthens, all designated revenues will remain in the Trust Fund. However, the General Assembly's acceptance of the Governor's budget allocation during these tough economic times took courage and is a loud statement about the importance of a healthy Bay."
