Bay Foundation Commends Senator Whipple, Delegate Pollard for Years of Service to Virginia and the Bay

(RICHMOND, VA)Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) Virginia Executive Director Ann F. Jennings issued the following statement regarding announcements today that Senator Mary Margaret Whipple (D-31st) and Delegate Albert Pollard (D-99th) are retiring from the Virginia General Assembly:

"The Chesapeake Bay and natural resources across Virginia will lose two champions with the retirements of Senator Whipple and Delegate Pollard. Both have been strong and consistent voices for conservation in the General Assembly and taken active leadership roles to further environmental protection.

"The Chesapeake Bay has no more committed advocate in the legislature than Senator Whipple. She is the current vice-chair of the Chesapeake Bay Commission and for years has played a pivotal role on the Senate Agriculture, Conservation and Natural Resources Committee. She has received the Chesapeake Bay Foundation's Legislator of the Year Award three timesin 1998 for sponsoring legislation that strengthened Virginia's wetland mitigation banking program; in 2000 for sponsoring Virginia's successful non-tidal wetland protection legislation that continues to protect thousands of acres of non-tidal wetlands in the Commonwealth; and in 2009 for her role promoting additional funding for farm conservation practices and for helping defeat a resolution supporting the introduction of a non-native Chesapeake Bay oyster.

"Delegate Pollard has for years represented water-dependent Northern Neck and been a faithful friend to Chesapeake Bay interests. Among other issues, he actively opposed multiple bills that would have advanced the construction of the environmentally destructive King William Reservoir, for which he received CBF's Legislator of the Year Award in 2004.

"On behalf of CBF and all who care about the Bay and Virginia's natural resources, I congratulate these two distinguished legislators for their many successes and their years of leadership and service to Virginia. We wish them all the best in their future endeavors."
