Proposal Would Permanently Cut Trust Fund and POS;
Derail Bay Cleanup

CBF is currently petitioning the Senate Budget & Taxation Committee and the House Appropriations Committee to reject these recommendations and honor the governor's budget request for the Chesapeake Bay Trust Fund and Program Open Space.

(ANNAPOLIS, MD)Kim Coble, Maryland Executive Director of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, issued the following statement today following the Department of Legislative Services' proposal permanently to reduce funding to the Chesapeake and Atlantic Coastal Bays Trust Fund and Program Open Space (Senate Budget & Taxation):

"The legislature boldly established the Trust Fund in 2007 to accelerate the cleanup of the Chesapeake Bay. Maryland plans to rely more than ever on the fund in the coming years. This proposal would decimate the fund and derail Maryland's commitment to Bay restoration.

"Maryland has listed at least 22 different strategies in its Watershed Implementation Plan that would be funded through the Trust Fund. How can we meet our commitment to restore the Bay if we are cutting funds dedicated to that clean-up job?

"We understand the need for austerities. The Trust Fund already has been cut nearly 43 percent this year. This proposal would not only cut it further, but make it impossible for Maryland to meet its obligations to clean up the Bay.

"Maryland has been a national leader in land conservation for four decades, thanks to Program Open Space, and to a reliable source of funding. This proposal would cripple that program, and make Maryland's national leadership on conservation a thing of the past."

Here is a list of 21 strategies in the Maryland Water Implementation Plan that rely on the Trust Fund.
