CLAGETT FARMFrom the Ground Up
Located just 5 miles from the Capital Beltway, we at Clagett Farm strive to support our community and sustain our environment with our vegetable production project called "From the Ground Up." Started in 1992, "From the Ground Up" is a joint effort of the Capital Area Food Bank and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. We raise a wide variety of produce and strive to provide our food to people of all income levels. Almost half of our produce is distributed free or at reduced prices to underserved communities in Washington D.C. The rest is sold through our Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program.
Feeding the Hungry
Every year, we distribute 40 to 50 percent of our harvest to low-income people in the Washington, D.C., area. In 2009, that came out to 30,090 pounds of produce. This included donations to the following agencies:
- Bread for the City: Provides food, clothing, medical care, and legal and social services to vulnerable D.C. residents.
- D.C. Central Kitchen: Prepares 4,500 meals daily for homeless shelters and other social-service agencies in D.C.
- Food and Friends: Provides prepared meals to people with debilitating illness, such as HIV/AIDS and cancer.
- Martha's Table: Provides educational programs, food, clothing, and enrichment opportunities to at-risk children, youth, and families.
- My Mother's House: A holistic health facility for women and their children, which offers meals and food baskets.
- Shepherd's Table: Provides help to people who are homeless or in need by providing basic services, including meals, social services, medical support, clothing, and other assistance.
- So Others Might Eat: Meets basic needs of homeless and poor citizens; helps them make real and lasting changes in their lives; advocates for stronger governmental solutions to poverty and homelessness in D.C.
Each organization has applied to become a recipient and we've chosen them because they can pick up the produce reliably, and distribute it quickly to low-income individuals who can use it. Typically the produce we donate includes some that we have harvested especially for that organization, as well as the leftover produce from the CSA pick-up the day before.
