Nicolas Anderson

Nicolas Anderson serves as a science fellow at the Chesapeake Bay Foundation in Annapolis, Maryland. He grew up in Earlysville, Virginia, at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains, where an early interest in the outdoors developed into a broader interest in ecology, conservation, and the ways people interact with natural systems.
Nicolas attended the University of Virginia, where he studied biology and economics. His interest in ecology and quantitative science led him to Stony Brook University, where he pursued a Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolution. His doctoral research focused on coastal ecosystems, particularly how environmental conditions influence the early life stages, recruitment, and distribution of ribbed mussels in salt marshes.
Nicolas has a background in field and laboratory research, experimental design, data analysis, ecological modeling, education, and scientific communication. His work combines observations from natural systems with experiments and quantitative approaches to better understand how coastal ecosystems function and respond to changing conditions. At CBF, he is interested in applying these skills to restoration and conservation questions throughout the Chesapeake Bay watershed, helping connect scientific research with practical management decisions.
