CBF Statement on New Flood Standards for Virginia Buildings

Today Gov. Ralph Northam released a new executive order that sets aggressive, forward-looking standards for new state-owned buildings to protect against threats from flooding and sea level rise.

Chesapeake Bay Foundation Assistant Virginia Director Peggy Sanner released the following statement.

“This significant step by Governor Northam both ensures protection of taxpayer-supported properties and establishes an important example of resiliency planning in the face of climate change.
“Sea level rise and extreme weather are already threatening Virginia’s coastal infrastructure and the health of the Chesapeake Bay, and those threats will continue to grow. To protect Virginians, our economy, and our waterways, we urge the Northam Administration and our other elected leaders to continue to take action to protect Virginia and the Chesapeake Bay from climate change."
