“My Voice Was Really Heard”

CBF Maryland Student Leaders share their experiences lobbying their legislators in Annapolis

On one of the coldest mornings of the year, a dozen high school students shivered in front of the Maryland State House in Annapolis.

“One quick group picture,” I demanded before we all scurried inside. Under their coats and gloves, the group of CBF’s Maryland Student Leaders were dressed to impress. They knew that they’d be spending the day meeting their local representatives and presenting why restoring and protecting the Chesapeake Bay means so much to them.

What they didn’t know was what else was in store—being recognized for their dedication to Bay saving in both house and senate floor sessions, and running into Governor Wes Moore in the State House cafeteria!

Advocating for strong environmental legislation is an important part of protecting water quality and saving the Bay. The student leaders wanted to talk to their local legislators and encourage them to vote favorably on some of this year’s key environmental bills such as the Chesapeake Bay Legacy Act and the CHERISH Act.

For most students, it was their first time speaking with legislators. “I was surprised how much our senators and delegates actually seemed to care what we had to say and were responsive to our message,” said Eva Kirila. “I felt like my voice was really heard.”

“The best thing I learned today was how easy it is to get involved. You don’t have to be an elected official to make a difference,” said Makenzie Rieves.

Lobby days are one of the many ways that CBF facilitates hands-on learning for students in the Bay watershed. Meaningful experiences on the Bay inspire the next generation to protect our critical natural resources. Our Student Leadership Program specifically targets students who are already passionate about the Chesapeake Bay and want to channel that passion into action.

“Each and every one of these students inspires me,” said Jocelyn Tuttle, CBF’s Maryland Student Leadership Coordinator. “Many of them are pursuing careers in the environmental field and will be our future leaders fighting climate change and preserving the Bay. CBF wants to equip them with the tools they need to succeed in that journey.”
