Each year, CBF oyster gardeners turn in their "mature" oysters at CBF Oyster Roundups at various locations throughout Virginia. This year we will be collecting oysters from June into August. CBF transplants the oysters the same day we receive them to state-managed sanctuary reefs, where they are allowed to continue growing and spawning—helping to jump-start local oyster populations.
These roundups are also a way to get new baby oysters for the year. A $25 fee is required for spat-on-shell to offset program costs. Your 18" x 9" cages should be reused year after year. If you need to replace cages or are expanding the number of batches you will be growing, additional cages can be requested during registration free of charge.
CBF is proud to once again partner with Lynnhaven River NOW and the Elizabeth River Project to help expand our oyster gardening program. The Oyster Gardening event in Virginia Beach is co-hosted by Lynnhaven River NOW. The Oyster Gardening event in Norfolk for RiverStar Homes and RiverStar businesses is co-hosted by the Elizabeth River Project.
