35th Annual Clean the Bay Day
Saturday, June 1, 2024
9 a.m.-Noon

Zone Captains play an essential role in making sure Clean the Bay Day runs smoothly. Each clean-up site requires one Zone Captain to oversee the volunteers and ensure paperwork is filled out correctly. Zone Captains will be provided with a packet of materials and a hat before the event and are expected to become familiar with those materials, especially the Zone Captain Guide. All materials are provided below.

A replay of our virtual Zone Captain information session will be provided.

If you’re interested in being a Zone Captain, during registration please select the “I’d like to volunteer as a Zone Captain” option. If you decide after you register, make sure to email your Clean the Bay Day Coordinator letting them know that you’re interested in being a Zone Captain. They will provide you with your location assignment and other information. If you volunteer as a Zone Captain after registration and would like to attend the training webinar, please send an email to [email protected]. A recording of the training webinar will also be available.

Zone Captain Responsibilities

Clean the Bay Day runs from 9 a.m. to noon and volunteers typically arrive 15 to 30 minutes early. As a Zone Captain, it’s best to be one of the first people there so you can start getting people signed in prior to 9 a.m. Part of a Zone Captain’s responsibility is making sure no-one gets left behind, so Zone Captains are not permitted to leave until all volunteers have checked out with them.

Zone Captains' main day-of responsibilities are:

  • Ensure volunteers sign-in.
  • Go over the site and clean-up information
    • Review safety
    • Identify litter collection site(s)
    • Review what to collect and what not to collect
    • Review yellow volunteer data cards
    • Caution regarding sensitive habitat
    • Take headcount of volunteers
    • Split volunteers into teams
  • Distribute Volunteer Data Cards.
  • Ensure volunteers “check-out” with you and all materials are returned at the end of the event.
  • Compile the volunteer’s data onto the Zone Captain Report.
  • Return all the documents to your Clean the Bay Day Coordinator.

The following materials are for the use of Clean the Bay Day Zone Captains and Partners only.

Forms and Resources

  • Zone Captain Guide
This is your complete reference guide with guidelines, tips, and safety information. Please review the entire document carefully before Clean the Bay Day.
  • Volunteer Data Card
To be completed by your volunteer teams during the cleanup to summarize their results. These are returned to the Zone Captain at the end of the cleanup to be tallied.
  • Zone Captain Report Card
This is the final data collection tally from each cleanup site. Information entered on this card includes data from all Volunteer Data Cards. Complete this form at the end of your cleanup and call it in to your Area Coordinator.
  • Parental Permission Form
Volunteers under 18 years of age are required to have a parental permission form signed by a guardian if their gardian is not present at Clean the Bay Day. The signed form must be given to the adult designated to supervise the child for the day. The designated adult must turn the form over to the site Zone Captain on the Day of the event. Minors attending with a parent or guardian do not need to complete this form.
  • Clean the Bay Day Safety and Volunteer Sign-In Form
ALL volunteers must sign in on this form the day of the cleanup. This is both a liability waiver and contact-information collector. Families may sign in as a single entry.
  • Certificate of Appreciation
